French Onion Ground Beef Casserole made approachable with clear cues, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 large onions sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup French fried onions
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add sliced onions to the skillet and sauté until tender and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Move the cooked onions to one side of the skillet and add ground beef to the other side. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Once the beef is browned, mix in the caramelized onions and season with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Stir in the beef broth and bring to a simmer, allowing it to reduce slightly for about 5 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat and fold in the sour cream until fully combined.
  8. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish and spread it evenly.
  9. Top the mixture with shredded Swiss cheese, spreading it evenly.
  10. Sprinkle French fried onions on top for added crunch.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  12. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
