Ingredients
  

  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Method
 

  1. Cook the macaroni according to package instructions.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  4. Add flour to the melted butter and whisk to create a roux.
  5. Gradually add the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
  6. Add mustard powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper; continue whisking until thickened.
  7. Remove from heat and gradually stir in the cheeses until melted.
  8. Combine the drained macaroni with the cheese sauce, stirring to coat evenly.
  9. In a separate bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs with olive oil.
  10. Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish and top with the panko mixture.
  11. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
