Crafting Savory Layers of Homemade Lasagna

Homemade Lasagna made approachable with clear cues, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients
  

  • 9 lasagna noodles
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Method
 

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente; drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat; add the diced onion and cook until translucent.
  4. Add minced garlic and ground beef; sauté until the meat is browned.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, and salt; let it simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  6. In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
  7. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  8. Layer noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, and more meat sauce; repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with meat sauce and mozzarella on top.
  9. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the top layer.
  10. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  11. Let the lasagna rest for 15 minutes before serving.
